I’m a student again

Hello! I’m back with a huge update. As you know, over the pandemic, I have been making my own short films and getting more into editing. Even though I had already been editing vlogs for a few years, I developed an even deeper appreciation for editing this year. So, I decided that I might like to pursue this as a career along with acting. When it comes to being an actor, I have no say in whether I get hired or not. That’s all up to the director, who might or might not cast me for a number of reasons. But with editing, I’d only need to depend on my skills and not my appearance nor the way I speak. And I already do lots of my own editing, so why not try to make some money out of it? So, I made my decision - I am going back to school to learn how to be an editor.

First, I looked online to see what schools offer programs specializing in editing. That’s when I found Humber College in Toronto (well, Etobicoke). They have a one year program in Post Production that included a guaranteed work placement. This sounded perfect, but I still made sure to research other schools just in case. But no matter what I found, I still kept coming back to Humber’s Post Production program. All you needed was a bachelor’s degree and a portfolio. It truly was a perfect match for me. I applied and sent in some of my short films as my portfolio. And guess what…..I GOT IN!

So that’s what I’ve been up to this month. I’m currently living in Etobicoke and attending school full time. I only have two in-person classes and the rest are online, but I am enjoying this hybrid. I get to meet my classmates in person some days, and other days I can curl up in bed while watching the lectures (haha). The classes seem great so far and so do my classmates. We even already did karaoke together! I think it’s gonna be a fun year.

For our first class project, we had to make an intro video that showcases ONE aspect of ourselves while telling a story. I didn’t really know what to do at first, but with all my footage that I have from all the films I’ve worked on throughout the years, I figured I could just compile scenes of me acting and dancing and make like a mini documentary of how I feel about being an actor and dancer. I thought this would also be a good way to “market myself” to these future filmmakers. My number one goal is still to act in film and television, so I’m hoping through this program, I’ll meet the right people who might consider me for future projects. And of course, learning how to edit films should also help me get to where I want to be.

I don’t know how the rest of the year is going to go, but I’m looking forward to the rest of my journey doing Post Production at Humber!
