Dancing from ocean to ocean

Back at the start of 2021, things had gotten pretty bad. The world was in lockdown once again and we had no chance of seeing our family or friends from across the globe. I wanted to find a way to connect with all my friends from around the world, so I came up with a fun dance video project. I asked a few friends, each from different continents, to participate in this “lockdown” dance video idea I had. We’d all dance to the song “Lockdown” by Koffee, a song I chose because it really resonated with me throughout the pandemic. Plus, it is a Dancehall song (and I LOVE Dancehall). The song would be divided up amongst us and we’d each create our own choreography to our section. I have friends who are not only Dancehall dancers but also Waackers and Hip-Hop dancers, so I wanted to see what everyone would come up with and showcase each dancer’s style. I had friends from Spain, the Netherlands, Japan and even Benin participate in this project. It truly was an international dance video. I, of course, also participated in this project and represented Canada, so I made sure to film me dancing in the snow (in the middle of February). It was a great contrast to others who were in warmer countries.

The editing of this video also posed quite a challenge. Everyone had different video qualities, which made some look less HD than others. But in the end, I think it all looked great! Who cares if the editing isn’t perfect. The important thing about this project was getting everyone to have fun during the lockdown and feel connected to one another, even though we are oceans away from each other.

Being in lockdown made us feel sad and isolated, but through dance, we could feel a little bit closer to one another. Whether you're in snowy Canada or sunny Spain, just go out there and do your thing. You are never alone. Even though we are oceans apart, we can still find ways to feel connected :)

Thank you to all my amazing dance friends for participating! I really hope I can see you all in person soon.

*Also, this marks one of my last videos that I edited before entering my Post Production program. Let’s see how much my editing skills will have improved in my next video ;)
