My latest Film Challenge Project

I’m finally back with another film for the Ottawa Filmmakers Weekly Film Challenge. I realized I hadn’t submitted one for 3 months! The theme this time was “Homecoming,” but I had no idea what to do at first. Homecoming is not something we really celebrate here in Canada, so I thought I would twist it around and interpret it as “coming home.” That’s when the idea of a welcome home dinner party came to mind. For these weekly film challenges, I tend to make artistic and meaningful shorts, but this time I thought it would be fun to incorporate my three girls and make a comedy. I didn’t stop there though. Since this involved a dinner party, I figured why not add a couple more guests? Who else could be invited (or not invited in this case)? How about Jacklyn’s mysterious boyfriend who is always mentioned but never seen? And what if a little kid were to show up unexpectedly? In the end, I ended up having six characters and I must admit it was a challenge to film! It took over 3 hours to shoot and even more time to edit. So much masking was involved and my mistakes are definitely visible. But in spite of that, this was the most fun to shoot since I got to play even more crazy characters. Maybe “Jenny” and “Joe” will make it into more of my goofy videos in the future.
